Chapter 4

The Distribution of Rosy Boas

This chapter discusses the range of the Rosy Boa in California, Arizona and Mexico. The chapter discusses each US county individually and lists every observed locality of Rosy Boa both in the US and in Mexico that the authors were able to compile throughout their years of research. It discusses mountain ranges, geographical barriers and the limits of the Rosy Boas range. Only the introductions to each section are listed here due to the sensitivity of the locality information contained.

"California
The distribution of Rosy Boas in California has been documented very well due in part to the efforts of devoted local enthusiasts that have been taking to the fields for decades. The only areas remaining little understood are the outer reaches of the desert regions. This distribution summary of Rosy Boas in California was pieced together from over 650 museum records, hobbyist records, and a handful of reliable anecdotal reports."

"Arizona
In Arizona, Rosy Boas are much less frequently encountered. In contrast to California, for the compilation of this distribution summary only 88 museum and hobbyist records were available. Unfortunately helpful anecdotal reports were few as most hobbyists seeking out boas in Arizona appear to concentrate on the same handful of already documented localities. More work is needed to fully document the extent of the Rosy Boas distribution in Arizona."

"Nevada
It has long been questioned whether or not the Rosy Boa resides within the state of Nevada. There appears to be little to no ecological difference between certain ranges in the southern tip of the state and inhabited ranges across the border in Arizona and California. One locality very likely to harbor Boas is..."

"Baja California North
For the northern half of the Baja Peninsula 60 locality records were available for review. This may seem like an insignificant amount but not when you consider that the land area of Baja California north is roughly half the size of the range of the Rosy Boa in California. The number of specimens records per square mile in this region approximates that of Arizona. There is still adequate room for exploration in Baja California North but we do have a good understanding of the Boas distribution here."

"Baja California South
Just over 50 locality records were available for Baja California South. A large proportion of these were concentrated in the cape region. Baja California south has potential for much more investigation into the distribution of the Rosy Boa."

"Sonora
Sonora Mexico is the largest unknown area within the range of the Rosy Boa. Very few unique records are available from the state although the Boa is expected to be widespread. Only 26 records from 5 institutions and a couple of print references are compiled together here. Most of these records available from Sonora come from 3 areas; the area surrounding Guayamas and Empalme, the highway north of Hermosillo, and the Pinacate/Sonoyta region."
